Power Packs is an ongoing partnership with the Champion Center, the Allentown School District and Life Church which positively impacts the lives of elementary school students. Bags which have been lovingly assembled by volunteers are given to children. The “Power Packs” are filled with healthy meals and snacks, hygiene items and other necessities to get the students through the weekend - every single week. The principals of the four schools which Power Packs currently serves report about the tremendous impact this nourishment makes on the precious children it feeds. Other principals and leaders in the school district express the need for this program’s expansion to more schools throughout the Allentown School District. Currently, 145 students are served and our goal is to continue to grow.
Hunger can negatively affect a child’s school performance. Children need nutrients so they can grow, develop and focus on learning instead of thinking about the food they need. Ultimately, they need to be able to concentrate in the classroom so they can succeed in school and be prepared to enter the workforce as adults. Research shows that children who are unsure of where their next meal may come from are more likely to have poor test scores leading to repeated grades. Additionally, children struggling with hunger are less equipped to reach their full potential. Children from homes lacking consistent access to food are more likely to experience developmental impairments in areas of language, motor skills and behavior.
